If you are searching for a manual block making machine or a modular automatic brick making machine and you are not a mechanical engineer, this guide is for you. I handle purchasing for a 35-person concrete products company. In a typical year I process 60-80 orders and manage roughly $700,000 in purchases across 12 vendors. I do not design machines. I do the buying admin: requests for quotes, spec checks, purchase orders, and the headaches that happen after delivery.
The 2022 machine purchase changed how I look at buying decisions. The lowest quote was not the most expensive mistake; the missing support plan was. Since then I use a simple checklist before any machine PO, and these are the seven steps that have saved me the most trouble.
The Seven-Step Buying Checklist
1. Start with curing space, not machine cycle time
The easiest way to pick the wrong machine is to compare blocks per hour first. I have done it. A concrete block has to cure before it can be moved or sold, and your rack or yard capacity is a hard limit. A conveyor can feed a machine faster than your forklifts can take blocks away.
Before you contact suppliers, calculate daily curing capacity by block type and decide how many operators you can put on each shift. If you cannot explain where 1,000 blocks will sit overnight, an automatic line is not your biggest opportunity yet. In that situation, a small cement block making machine or a hand operated concrete block making machine may actually fit your workflow better.
2. Understand the four broad machine categories
Suppliers use product names loosely, so it helps to focus on workflow.
- A manual block making machine or hand operated concrete block making machine is usually a simple mold plus a vibrating or tamping action. It is slower, easier to maintain, and good for smaller jobs.
- A small cement block making machine typically adds a hopper or a vibrating table. It still needs people to handle pallets, but it removes some of the physical effort.
- A hydraulic hollow block machine uses hydraulic pressure to compact the concrete. It is a common choice when you need dense hollow blocks with consistent edges.
- A modular automatic brick making machine is designed for higher production. Modular usually means you can add pallet conveyors, stackers, and later control systems when volume justifies them.
There is overlap. One supplier may call the same unit both manual and automatic. Use the categories as a starting point, not a purchase specification.
3. Define the block or brick dimensions and the mold before comparing
The biggest mismatch I find in quote comparisons is block size. I once asked a supplier for a quote on a standard brick machine. He heard standard local hollow block. I meant the 4-inch by 8-inch by 16-inch solid unit in our catalog. We caught it before paying the final invoice because I sent a drawing and asked for a mold drawing back.
Send your exact product drawings to every supplier. Ask for a mold drawing with the following information:
- Dimension of the cured block or brick
- Number of blocks per cycle
- Wall thickness and core shape
- Face texture
- Mold change time
If you need load-bearing concrete masonry units, check whether their proposed machine can produce units that meet ASTM C90 or your local equivalent. Ask what mix design they assumed when they said yes.
4. Request a real parts manual before the PO
This is the step I skipped years ago, and it came back as a 16-day downtime. The machine was simpler then, but nobody had a proper parts diagram. We guessed at a vibrator belt tensioner part number and guessed wrong twice.
For a new machine, ask for the following before purchase:
- An exploded parts diagram with part numbers, not a sales brochure
- Part numbers for hydraulic seals, pump, valves, belts, filters, electric motor, and limit switches
- A recommended spare parts list
- A maintenance schedule
For a hydraulic hollow block machine, the hydraulic system is the main reliability risk. If the supplier cannot show exactly which seal, hose, or valve you will need, after-sales support will be guesswork.
5. Put commissioning and operator training in the contract
An automatic brick making machine needs leveling, electrical connection, pressure adjustment, and a test run with your local aggregate. A hydraulic machine also needs the oil temperature, flow, and pressure set correctly. Do not assume commissioning means the same thing to the supplier.
When I said commissioning included, the supplier heard that we would run it ourselves. That misunderstanding added four days to our startup. The phrase that cost us time was that's not in our scope. I did not put the scope in writing.
The purchase order should state:
- Number of technician days included at your site
- Who pays for travel, accommodation, and food
- Whether the machine will be test-run at the factory before shipping
- Whose responsibility it is if the block quality is wrong during commissioning
6. Compare installed cost, not quoted machine price
Total installed cost can easily be 30-50 percent higher than the machine price. If you buy an international machine, add freight, import clearance, inland transport, concrete foundation, anchor bolts, power cable, transformer, hydraulic oil, mold sets, pallets, and the first set of spare parts.
Ask for a proforma invoice and confirm the commercial invoice, packing list, and shipping documents will match exactly. That sounds like finance rather than machine buying, but a one-word mismatch can stop a shipment at customs. A supplier who cannot handle paperwork reliably is a risk no quoted price removes.
This is where the cheapest hydraulic hollow block machine quote often changes. The additional cost of a dedicated technician, a longer warranty, or a local parts warehouse can be worth more than the price difference.
7. Call the support line before you send money
Do not judge after-sales support from the brochure. Call the support number during your normal working hours and ask these questions:
- Where is the nearest service technician?
- Which spare parts are stocked in your country or region?
- What are typical lead times for wear parts?
- Who answers after-sales questions after installation?
- How are warranty claims processed?
One supplier's support line was a full voicemail box. The spreadsheet said their quote was 18 percent lower, so I almost ignored it. I should have trusted the full voicemail box from the start. The supplier I chose later was not the cheapest quote, but they answered the phone when the machine stopped working on a Tuesday morning.
Mistakes I Still Watch For
These might be obvious once you see them, but they are easy to repeat:
- Buying on theoretical output. Machine output figures assume an ideal mix, good molds, and an experienced operator. The real output is lower.
- Ignoring electric power. Some machines are 380V at 50Hz, some are 460V at 60Hz. If the machine does not match your site, you need a transformer or a different motor.
- Calling a manual machine low maintenance. A hand operated concrete block making machine still has bearings, bushes, and mold surfaces that wear.
- Assuming one quote is enough. Get at least three quotes and compare the same scope: machine, molds, commissioning, transport, and support.
Bottom Line
A block making machine is not a single purchase decision. It is the start of an operations and supplier relationship. The fundamentals have not changed: mix quality, mold accuracy, compaction, and curing still determine whether your block sells. What has changed since 2020 is how much information a buyer can reasonably expect before payment. In 2025, a supplier should be able to send a parts manual, define the commissioning scope, and tell you the lead time for a spare part.
If they cannot do that, move on. The right brick machine is the one whose support plan matches your production plan, not just the one with the lowest invoice.
