I Tried to Cut Costs on Bomag Roller Parts. Here's What It Actually Cost Us.

Cost is still the first thing I look at. That's my job, and I don't apologize for it. But the definition of cost has changed for me. It's not the number on the invoice. It's that number plus the risk you're taking on, plus the downtime if the part fails, plus the phone calls you'll have to make on a cold morning while a crew stands around waiting.

I'd like to say that $5,250 mistake was the last one I'll ever make. Probably not realistic. But it was the last time I bought a critical part on price alone. That's a lesson I'll carry into every budget review from here on.
