I'm the quality and compliance manager for a regional construction equipment distributor. We're a BOMAG dealer, which means I review pre-delivery checklists, rental return forms, and parts requests for compactors, vibratory rammers, and related machinery. In peak season that's roughly 35 to 45 units a week. In 2024, I rejected just under 9% of first-run inspections because of documentation gaps, worn vibration mounts, or missing electrical test records.
This list is for site supervisors, equipment managers, and contractors who need to know who inspects what on a job site. It also answers the question I hear more than any other: who should inspect a crane? Five items. Most of them take under 10 minutes.
1. BOMAG jumping jack parts: the two-minute look that matters
A vibratory rammer—what most crews call a jumping jack—looks like a simple machine. It isn't. The whole design is controlled vibration, so parts wear in patterns you won't catch by kicking the tires. When a jumping jack won't start, people fix the engine. But in our shop, the most common part failures on rammers are the shock mounts and springs.
- Rubber shock mounts. Check between the engine and the guide handle. Cracked, oil-soaked, or flattened mounts get replaced before the machine runs again. Bad mounts don't just make the handle shake harder; they put impact into the operator's arms and the frame.
- Springs and spring seats. Look for hairline cracks near the base of the spring, not just visible breaks. A cracked spring seat that gets ignored usually takes other parts down with it.
- Fuel smell. Walk around the carburetor and fuel lines. A faint fuel smell on a hot rammer is easy to rationalize. It's also how equipment fires start.
- Base plate wear. When corners round off, the rammer starts walking and compaction energy goes sideways instead of down into the trench.
When you're ordering BOMAG jumping jack parts, check the part number against the parts diagram instead of eyeballing the old part. Vibratory loads punish tiny differences in material and dimension. A shock mount that looks identical can have a different rubber durometer or a different steel insert, and you won't know until it fails early. (Should mention this applies to other rammers too, not just BOMAG.)
From the outside, a jumping jack looks almost maintenance-free. The reality is many parts are designed to be consumable so the frame and operator don't take the abuse.
2. BOMAG roller compactor: pre-start checks that usually get skipped
Roller compactors get a walk-around before every shift. The problem is that a lot of walk-arounds are just a lap around the machine with a coffee cup in one hand. Checks that actually catch issues:
- Look underneath. Fluid on the ground is obvious. Check the belly pan as well. A slow leak that only shows when the machine is parked tells you a seal is starting to fail.
- Hydraulic hoses around the articulation joint. That's usually where chafing shows first. A shiny spot on the hose cover means the hose is on its way out.
- Drum scrapers. Worn or missing scrapers let material build up on the drum, which affects asphalt mat quality and wears the drum faster.
- Vibration system. Start the machine and actually engage the vibration. More than one roller has been sent out with an "intermittent vibration" complaint because nobody spent the one minute it takes to verify.
- Emergency stop. Test it with the engine running. If the e-stop doesn't kill the engine or the vibratory system, that machine gets red-tagged, not yellow-tagged.
For a BOMAG roller compactor, follow the daily checklist in the operator's manual for the specific model. A double-drum asphalt roller has different daily items than a soil compactor. The manual is the authority; the walk-around is just the routine that makes it consistent.
3. GFCI breaker: the test that's cheaper than the alternative
Temporary power is one of the weakest parts of site quality programs. On construction sites, OSHA requires ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-amp receptacles that aren't part of permanent building wiring (29 CFR 1926.404(b)(1)(ii)). That protection is often provided by a GFCI breaker inside a portable panel or breaker box.
Here's the part most people get wrong: pressing TEST on a GFCI breaker proves the device can trip itself, but it doesn't prove the whole downstream circuit is safe. The internal test button simulates a fault at the device, not at the end of a wet extension cord.
- Test before the crew uses the circuit. Press TEST; the breaker should trip.
- Reset it. Then plug in the actual tool and run it under load.
- If it trips under load, don't keep resetting it. Investigate the cord, the tool, and the moisture conditions first.
I know the manufacturer guidance usually says monthly testing. On an active job site, I'd treat that as the minimum. Our fleet gets a weekly GFCI breaker test during season, plus another test before every rental leaves the yard.
An untested GFCI breaker is just a breaker that hasn't failed yet. And a new panel still gets tested. I once skipped the test on a brand-new panel because it just came from the shop. It tripped later that same week. Nobody got hurt, but only because the situation wasn't as bad as it could have been.
4. Breaker box: look, but don't open it
I'm not an electrician. I can inspect the outside of a breaker box during an audit, but the cover comes off only by a qualified electrician. That boundary matters more than a lot of supervisors think.
Without opening anything, I check for:
- Water or mud around the enclosure. This is the most common issue on temporary panels, usually visible at the bottom or around the knockouts.
- Missing dead-front cover or open slots. A breaker box on an active site should be closed and secured. If it isn't, anyone can reach energized parts.
- Discoloration or burn marks near a breaker. That indicates an overloaded circuit or a loose connection.
- Cables entering through open knockouts. Cords need proper strain relief and protection. Open holes also let in water.
Stepping from "I can see the problem" to "I'll fix it myself" is exactly where electrical incidents happen. The correct next step is always the same: call the electrical contractor.
On a breaker box, know the limit of your own role. A site operator can find a visible problem; a qualified electrician has to resolve it.
5. Who should inspect a crane?
"Who should inspect a crane?" sounds like a question with a simple answer. But it depends on which inspection you're talking about. The short version: a designated competent person handles frequent checks, and a qualified person handles the periodic or comprehensive inspection. For construction cranes, the federal requirements are in OSHA's Subpart CC—29 CFR 1926.1417 as of early 2025.
- Daily / pre-shift inspection. A competent person—often the operator—performs this at the start of each shift, following the manufacturer's instructions. It covers operational components, visible damage, leaks, and basic function, and it should be documented.
- Periodic / comprehensive inspection. A qualified person performs this at intervals set by the manufacturer and the standard. That's frequently at least every 12 months for mobile cranes. Documentation is required.
What this means on the ground:
- Don't let a 20-year operator's daily inspection become a substitute for the annual one. They're different checks.
- Ask for the inspector's credentials before they start. Being told someone is "qualified" isn't the same as seeing a certificate or training record for the type of crane being inspected.
- If someone asks you who should inspect a crane, don't just name a job title. Name the requirement: "a competent person for the daily, a qualified person for the periodic," and then point to the records.
I'm not 100% sure about every state requirement on top of the federal baseline, so check your state plan and your insurer's rules before you schedule anything.
What still goes wrong
Most site quality problems are not caused by people ignoring the rules. They're caused by people quietly shrinking the scope of an inspection until it's convenient.
- Treating the daily walk-around as if it were the periodic inspection. Daily checks catch visible damage; periodic checks catch structural wear. They aren't interchangeable.
- Filling out an inspection sheet with "OK" in every box. A form without a comment section doesn't tell you what the operator actually looked at.
- Saving a small amount on a critical part. We've seen a $40 vibration mount take out a $400 base plate because the replacement wasn't suited for that application. That's not about original vs. aftermarket; it's about checking the spec and part number before installing.
- Resetting a tripped GFCI breaker without asking why it tripped. "It's probably the rain" is how a small fault turns into a serious one.
Quality on a job site comes down to knowing who inspects what, then giving people the time to do it properly. A crane gets a documented inspector. A breaker box gets a qualified electrician. A BOMAG jumping jack gets two minutes before every shift. The list isn't clever. It just has to happen every day.
