If you've typed 'road roller bomag' into a search bar, you're probably at the same stage I was a few years ago: comparing models and trying to figure out which one actually makes financial sense. This checklist is for contractors, rental companies, and anyone who has to answer for equipment spending later. I run procurement for a 40-person grading contractor. I've managed our equipment budget for seven years, negotiated with more than 30 dealers, and documented every purchase in our cost tracking system.

Step 1: Define the job, not just the model

People assume bigger machines are faster. What they don't see is the downtime you lose when a large roller can't get into the space where the work actually is. I'd rather send a compact unit that fits than a 10-ton roller that sits at the edge of the lot for half the day.
One honest limitation before you read further: if you need a roller for five days and won't use it again for six months, renting is often the better answer. This checklist assumes you'll own the machine for more than one season. For a one-person operation doing occasional driveway repairs, an authorized rental might be the smarter call.
Step 2: Use independent data for spec comparisons
I've used TractorData and similar 'tractor data' sites to verify engine models, weights, and production years. Those sites are useful, but they don't always cover the latest revisions. Sales brochures also list base weights that leave out cabs, air conditioning, emissions packages, or other items that change the shipping weight.
The specifics I verify before committing:
- Operating weight vs shipping weight. Freight quotes depend on this.
- Drum width and drum diameter for the exact model year.
- Centrifugal force and vibration frequency at each setting.
- Engine emissions tier and any aftertreatment requirements.
- Service intervals and the hydraulic oil specs the shop will need.
In 2023 I nearly approved a freight request based on a brochure weight that was almost 600 kg off from the manual weight. We caught it, but it should have been caught earlier. Now I ask for the spec sheet that matches the machine's serial number.
Step 3: Build a total-cost model before comparing prices
It took me seven years and over two dozen equipment orders to learn that purchase price isn't the same as total cost. Actually, it took one painful lesson: a machine bought on a 'great deal' needed a $4,200 hydraulic repair before it did 400 hours. That doesn't include the cost of waiting for parts.
Your total cost model should include:
- Purchase price plus freight, setup, and any rigging.
- Warranty term, exclusions, and what an extension costs.
- Local parts availability and the dollar cost of each day the machine is down.
- Training time for your operators and compatibility with your current fleet attachments.
- Estimated resale value after three to five years.
If you finance or lease, include the effective interest rate in the model. A lower price with a high rate can cost more over 48 months than a higher price at a normal equipment lender rate. We once had a vendor quote 9% financing while our usual lender was at 6.5%. The finance charge difference outweighed the discount. A price list doesn't show that.
I went back and forth between a new Bomag roller and an ex-rental unit for two weeks. The ex-rental was about $7,200 cheaper on paper. The new unit had a full warranty plus local dealer support. When I projected the three-year costs, the difference almost disappeared because the repair risk sat on my side of the spreadsheet. I'm not saying ex-rental is always a bad move. I'm saying the decision should be made on a total-cost basis, not on the first invoice.

Step 4: Verify dealer and parts support before you sign
According to BOMAG (bomag.com), the company has built compaction equipment since 1957 and supports machines through a global dealer network. That's a good base, but what matters on a Tuesday morning is your local dealer's parts stock.
Ask these questions before you commit:
- What common service parts do you keep in local stock?
- How long is your average lead time for a major component like a hydraulic pump or drive motor?
- Do you have a factory-trained technician for this model, and what is their current backlog?
In Q2 2024 I compared three dealers for a different machine. One had the full service kit in stock; another had to back-order everything from a regional warehouse with a nine-day lead time. Nine days of downtime costs more than most parts. That detail disappears when the comparison stops at price.
If the machine is going into a landfill, ask about wear-item lead times and guarding requirements. A Bomag trash compactor works in a corrosive environment, and parts planning is part of owning one.
Step 5: Plan for operator skill, including mini excavator experience
New crew members often ask how to drive a mini excavator because that's the first machine they'll use on a job. That skill is useful, but it doesn't translate directly to a heavy roller. A walk-behind plate compactor is a better training tool. Put a new person on that first, then a small ride-on roller, then the larger machines.
The operator part of the purchase doesn't show on the invoice. It shows up in bent brackets, damaged curbs, and inconsistent density. That's where equipment budgets leak. We've bought maybe 25 pieces of compact equipment over the years. Maybe 22, if I'm counting correctly. I'd have to check the system before quoting that to anyone.
A note on what this checklist doesn't cover
Every equipment website gets odd search traffic. 'Bucket golf' is one of the terms that shows up in our analytics. I don't know what that searcher was looking for, but it probably wasn't a road roller. If that's you, I can't help.
If you're buying at auction or from a private seller, stop and change the order of these checks. Condition history, operating hours, maintenance records, and wear items come first. Dealer parts support still matters, but machine condition matters more when there's no warranty behind it.
